STD Testing

What is STD testing?

STD testing refers to a group of laboratory procedures. These tests analyze samples of your bodily fluids, like blood, urine, or saliva, to diagnose sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). If you’re sexually active with more than one partner, it’s important to schedule STD testing regularly. Routine tests can determine if you’re contagious, ensuring your partners remain safe.

Who can benefit from STD testing?

Make an STD testing appointment at Top Doc OB/GYN if:

  • You’re about to begin a new sexual relationship
  • You and your partner don’t want to use condoms
  • You have multiple partners
  • You have symptoms of an STD

It’s also a good idea to get tested for STDs if your partner cheats on you or has multiple partners.

If you’re in a committed, monogamous relationship, regular STD testing typically isn’t necessary.

What diseases can STD testing identify?

Top Doc OB/GYN uses STD testing to identify various sexually transmitted diseases, including:

  • Chlamydia
  • Gonorrhea
  • Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
  • Hepatitis B
  • Syphilis
  • Trichomoniasis

Your provider can also order herpes testing if you’ve been exposed to someone with the herpes virus.

What does STD testing involve?

Top Doc OB/GYN offers several types of STD testing, including:

Blood and urine tests

Blood and urine tests analyze samples of your bodily fluids. Your provider can order urine or blood tests to check for HIV, gonorrhea, syphilis, or chlamydia.

Swabs

During this type of STD test, your provider swabs your vagina, urethra, or cervix to collect a sample. Your sample is sent to a laboratory where it’s analyzed for the presence of a virus, bacteria, or fungi.

HPV testing

If your Pap test results are abnormal, your provider might order testing for the human papillomavirus (HPV). If you have HPV, you’re more likely to experience cervical or anal cancer.

How long does it take to receive the results of STD testing?

After an STD test, it takes 1-3 days to receive your results. While you’re waiting, avoid sexual contact to prevent infecting others. Your Top Doc OB/GYN provider can develop a custom treatment plan if your test comes back positive. Usually, that includes a combination of prescription medication and education about safe sex.
